We keep television to an absolute minimum in our home. Typically its in the morning and gets turned off at 8am for the day.
If its the weekend there is really no change to the routine. There is much more to do and watching television is not high on our list. I will turn on the radio (Satellite or Pandora) and play music
Ellie goes to friends homes for playdates. When she comes home she will often say "We watched TV" and she was disappointed. She doesn't get into it. She would much rather play or draw or bake.
Fred will be going to Sun n Fun and we will be losing the living room flat panel television (Belongs to the company) for 10 days. I can't wait. I wish, wish, wish we could get rid of all the televisions and cable. It's not necessary. I would be content to just have on television and NO CABLE. But I won't push. Football season is in August. Fred would die.
When Sagan asks me, "Would you PLEASE turn on the TV PLEASE," I typically decline her request and offer her something to do in the kitchen or a chore in the house. She loves that. Wants to be all grown up!
When the TV is on past 8am it will likely be Food Network. We love to cook in our house so the kids really get into it as well.
This is a rare case Sagan is riveted to Nigela Feasts (7:30am). Sagan was so into it that she would repeat what Nigela was saying. "Scoop out the potatoes." "Put into an oven..." It was super sweet. While Sagan is watching Food Network Ellie is sitting on the couch reading The Magic Treehouse book series she loves so dearly. The is typical. Ellie knows that books are a better form of entertainment. No wonder she is reading 3rd and 4th grade level chapter books now. If she didn't read so ravenously she would be reading Mr. Putter and Tabby (low readers)still. Love that she loves to read.
While it is television it is educational. Not mindless.
